SeeingHaptics: Visualization for Preview, Examination, and Display of Haptic Designs

摘要


為了加強虛擬實境體驗的沈浸感,提供觸覺回饋是個常見的做法。 然而,現在用於開發虛擬場景的編輯器,開發者只能透過碰觸觸覺回 饋裝置來逐個體驗場景中的觸覺回饋,導致難以立即的檢查設計的內 容。 這篇論文提出了 SeeingHaptics,一個輔助開發三維觸覺回饋的編輯 系統,將觸覺回饋以視覺化的方式呈現在三維空間中,讓開發者可以 透過視覺來接收觸覺回饋的資訊。系統中以三維幾何形狀來模擬觸覺 回饋的影響範圍,並且用一個二維圖標來呈現該觸覺回饋的屬性。在 系統的圖形編輯介面上,Haptic Source 代表虛擬場景中由虛擬內容產 生的觸覺回饋,而 Haptic Listener 作為代理接收器,將使用者的皮膚觸 器延伸到虛擬空間中,讓使用者可以接收到發生在特定虛擬物件上的 觸覺回饋。同時,系統也提供了實體的觸覺回饋裝置雛形,用於提供 與實際用於虛擬實境體驗的裝置相似的觸覺感受,讓開發者除了視覺 外,也可以透過觸覺來進一步檢查他們設計的觸覺回饋。 最終的評估實驗顯示,經過短暫的訓練後,使用者能夠快速地 透過本系統開發出想要的觸覺回饋。而根據實驗的結果,我們得 到了一些可以幫助使用者更有效率的操作本系統的原則,並且認為 SeeingHaptics 是一個容易學習、足夠彈性、且具有潛力的三維觸覺回 饋編輯系統。

Rendering haptic feedback in virtual reality is a common approach to enhance the immersion of the contents. However, current editing tools for developing virtual environment only allows developers to access haptic feedbacks by touching the actuators, which makes it difficult to examine the de- sign effectively. This paper introduces SeeingHaptics, an authoring tool which visualizes properties of haptic feedbacks in 3D scenes. The active area of a certain feedback is displayed with a mesh (Figure 1.1a), while a 2D icon attaching by the mesh indicates the type of haptic sensation (Figure 1.1b). Within the virtual environment, the haptic feedbacks generated by virtual contents act as Haptic Sources; A Haptic Listener serves as the virtual representation of the user’s skin, allowing the user to ”listen” what is happening on the object. At the same time, Haptic Proxy, a hardware prototype providing corespondent physical haptic feedback allows developers to examine the design interactively by touching and experiencing. The evaluation showed that SeeingHaptics helped developers to rapidly create desired haptic effects after a short training session. Based on the results, possible extension designs were discussed. The study results suggested that SeeingHaptics is a learnable, flexible, and potential authoring tool for rapid design of various haptic effects.
