Exploring Cyclist’s Perception: Perspectives of Bikeway Deployment and Cycling Environment Acceptance

Cycling is a sustainable mode of transportation and governments in the world have actively managed to promote cycling in recent years. A significant amount of cycling infrastructure has been deployed to foster better environments for cycling; however, people’s perception towards different cycling environments are oftentimes ignored. Hence, this research employs Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to investigate cyclist’s perception towards cycling environments and the relevant facilities. First of all, a survey is designed, and a questionnaire is distributed for data collection both online and in-site. The cycling environments considered in this research include are On-road, On-narrow-street, and On-sidewalk. We then apply Factor Analysis to explore and confirm the potential structure between the observed variables and latent variables (cyclist’s perception and attitude), and finally three SEM models are developed for the three considered cycling environments. According to the analysis result, female cyclists have higher willingness to ride on each environment and are particularly positively-related to cycling On-road. Further, junior high school students statistically prefer to cycle on sidewalk and are negatively-related to On-road. In addition to social-demographic variables, facilities associated with each environment also play an important role upon the discussion of cyclist’s acceptance to ride in different environments. If there is any dedication or segregation facility for the right-of-way of cyclists, such as, dedicated path, people’s acceptance considerably increases. On the contrary, if there are facilities that can induce potential conflicts, for example, bus stops, the acceptance also significantly decreases. Furthermore, this research also finds that narrow streets have fair acceptance for cyclist. If the street can be designed more cyclist-friendly, cycling on narrow streets can be considered as an alternative to the current deployment of bike lanes on arterial roads. This research thoroughly considers common cycling environments in urban areas, and accordingly we are hoping that people’s acceptance and perception towards cycling environments can be taken into account for developing cycling network optimization models.
