BIM Model Requirements for Construction Monitoring Tasks with Augmented Reality

Recent research has focused on applying Augmented Reality (AR) technology in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. Research shows that Building Information Modeling (BIM) with AR can bring several benefits, such as improving safety, lowering labor costs, and enhancing visualization. However, it is still challenging for AR implementation because of the high investment in research and development of AR-oriented processes, high cost of tools and AR devices, incomplete and complicated BIM to AR process, and inadequate connection between on-site and BIM information. In order to contribute to the body of knowledge, this research focuses on defining BIM requirements that may support effective monitoring activities with AR. Additionally, a workflow that enables a practical process for AR-based daily construction monitoring tasks is introduced. In this research, the proposed method includes three steps: (1) AR tasks model requirements, (2) model preparation, and (3) on-site experiments. At first, it is essential to do a literature review to define the BIM model requirements for AR construction monitoring tasks. After that, we presented a BIM-to-AR workflow to transfer the BIM model to an AR-ready model for HoloLens by building's working system, schedule, and work area. This workflow facilitates the BIM conversion process and successfully efficiently visualizes the model. In the end, the result has been validated through two case studies and in-depth interviews with construction practitioners.
