The data for this study is drawn from the online database of United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) during 1999 to 2004.We employ the detailed information in patent documents to analyze the flows and direction of patent citations. This research aims at using the patent indicators to reflect the development in global FPD industry and the catch up strategy of Taiwanese FPD firms The findings of this study can be summarized as follows: 1. The revealed technological advantage (RTA)index in H01L of Taiwan and South Korea are 1.64 and 1.39,respectively. 2. The FPD patents of South Korea is more likely to cite Japanese patents than Taiwan, especially in younger patents 3. The seven major Taiwanese FPD firms have,on the average, directly cited 5% of their Japanese partners’patents ,but the average relative citation ratio with the Japanese partners (1.39) is higher than the average of all Taiwanese FPD firms average. 4. The seven major Taiwanese FPD firms have,on the average, cited 27% of other patents that are FPD-related patents, while for non-FPD related technology fields, the citation ratio is 73%.
