For the past few years, the problem of unemployment among college graduates has become increasingly serious. This is not only because of the business cycle and the balance of manpower demand and supply, but also related to the work attitude of the graduates. This study examines whether the parents’ negative work experience significantly changes the work value of the young generation, using PSFD (Panel Study of Family Dynamics) data. Our empirical results show that, without considering parent-child relationship, parents’ negative work experience doesn’t seem to influence their children’s work value. Children’s extrinsic work value is influenced by educational level. The lower the education level is, the more important they think about extrinsic work value. Children’s intrinsic work value is influenced by gender, family income, and whether they have to afford their livelihood. Female, the one has higher family income, and the one who needs to afford his livelihood tend to regard intrinsic value more important. When taking parent-child relationships into consideration within the younger generation, fathers’ negative work experience has an impact on children’s intrinsic work value, the same as literature concluded “the value related to work and responsibility usually affected by fathers.”Fathers’ negative work experience has a negative impact on children’s intrinsic work value, and the impact becomes bigger when the parent-child relationship is better, matching the hypothesis of this study.
