This study examines the impact of patent citation networks on technology capability in the semiconductors industry among advanced firms in US, Japan, Germany, France and Netherlands and latecomer firms in Taiwan, Korea and Singapore during 1990-2005. We find that learning could improve semiconductors firms’ technology capability. Moreover, the level of improvement in latecomer firms was greater than advanced ones. In addition, the more important position a firm had in the patent citation network, the better technology capability it had and latecomer firms were significantly better than advanced ones only in recent years, i.e. 2001-2005.
