Graduate Institute of International Business National Taiwan University Thesis Abstract Name: Chun-Kai Wang Advisor: Dr. Ji-Ren Lee A Study on the Entry of IT System Integrators into Automotive Electronics Manufacturing Businesses Technologies of optic electronics, communication and semiconductor have been increasingly applied to the field of automotive manufacturing during the last decade. Such change brought up with potential business opportunities for electronics manufacturing firms in general, IT system integration (SI) manufacturers in particular to leverage their existing competence bases to become a critical supplier in the automotive industry. Based on a thorough industry analysis on the automotive and automotive electronics industries respectively, the present study suggests that IT SI firms can start their business from the embedded devices which carry with minimum safety requirements and with little relevance to driving performance. However, lack of industry standard constitutes a major barrier to entry for these IT SI firms. To respond to this issue, this study also discusses the driving forces of standardization in automotive electronics industries. To offer competitive strategies for SI firms, we undertook a scenario analysis based on several scenario variables identified by industry analysis. These variables include: 1) the abundance of original technologies, 2) the openness of industry supply chain, 3) the degree of complexity of automotive device, Based on these four variables, we sketch three different scenarios. Based on the assumption that the industry standard would gradually emerge, the present study suggests in the short run, IT SI firms can focus on developing portable devices with competitive features so that they can maintain enough flexibility in resource allocation, while in the long run they can engage alliances with suppliers and complementors to make a multi-functional platform available for enhancing competitiveness.
