In Taiwan, social housing has always been an important issue in urban development, especially in Taipei. During the construction of social housing, the phenomenon of ‘labelling’ has resulted in a lack of integration with the surrounding neighborhood environment. The trend of aging creates the mixed problem when young people and the elderly living together. Due to the difficulty of obtaining urban land, how to adapt and reuse the old communities and surplus empty houses is another problem. These repulsive "heterogeneous phenomena" in the cities offers this research the possibility of rethinking new social housing typology. Hence, this study intends to create a new form of mixed social housing, and create a new way of lifestyle for young people to live with the elderly. This study is started by understanding the development of social housing and the relationship between consumerism. Through the study of Foucault's "heterogeneous space" (Foucault, 1966), this research identifies the three elements of social housing "mixing, sharing, and changing", and carry out corresponding case studies. To understand more about the lifestyle between elderly and young people, as well as create a living space where these two groups are mixed. We have practical observations, interviews and experiences of the elderly through the" Chang Gung Health and Culture Village". Data and interviews on young people lifestyle conducted by the "1000 Taipei Homes" by a team of Onion design are analyzed and observed. Furthermore, mixed and shared cluster life imagination between young people and elderly are explored. As mentioned above, four different scales (XL, L, M, S) to blur the boundaries of heterogeneous space are proposed. Finally, we take ‘Ximenting’ in Taipei as an experimental site. This site where is full of heterogeneous spaces (culture, age, place, architecture). Based on the above four scales of spatial strategies (including urban and waterfront, urban streetscape, old and new buildings, living spaces in housing units), we blur the boundaries of these heterogeneous spaces in the site, and then create new possibilities for mixed social housing and also encourage a new shared lifestyle between the young and the old. This study integrates the environment with the city to produce continuation of urban activities, and to bring life of generations fusing into the spaces. Also, it will improve the connection between social housing and surrounding environment network. At the same time, it provides new possibilities for urban regeneration in Taiwan.
