Various reading programs and newspaper reading education are promoted around the world, with the goal to increase the reading interests and cultivate a reading habit in students. The objective of this study was to use Mandarin Daily News as the material and utilize learning community as an approach for newspaper reading education to investigate the effects of newspaper reading education on students’ reading interests and reading abilities. The subjects of this study were 28 fifth-grade students of an experimental newspaper reading class in an elementary school in Taipei City. During a period of eight weeks, they received a series of lessons including “Theme-based teaching”, “One-minute news presenter”, “Newspaper reading worksheet”, “Q&A on newspaper reading”, and “One article of the week”. Based on the case study method, students’ questionnaire responses were used for quantitative analysis, and students’ sharing forms on newspaper reading, class observation records, and class photos and video files were collected for qualitative analysis. Results indicated that after implementation of the learning community-based newspaper reading education, the students showed an improved print exposure to all the 16 pages of Mandarin Daily News, with the highest print exposure to the “comic” page, and the largest increase in exposure to the “education” page. Except for the “story” page, all the pages had almost similar amounts of print exposure. Most of the students showed a positive attitude towards Mandarin Daily News and newspaper reading education, scoring highest on the item “I like newspaper reading” and having the largest increase in score for “I’d like to recommend newspaper reading to others”. As for students’ interests in reading extracurricular materials, “prose”, “verse”, “picture book”, “novel”, and “short story” were the genres of reading materials that could improve students’ willingness to read extracurricular materials. Among the themes of extracurricular materials, students showed a higher willingness to read only for “philosophy and religion” and “general” categories. Newspaper reading education could improve students’ self-evaluation of their basic Chinese language abilities. The score for “listening ability” was the highest, with the increase in score for “speaking ability” being the largest. In the aspect of “listening ability”, the highest score was observed for “I’ve become more patient in listening to others’ opinions”, and the increase in score for “I can think about how to solve the problem from listening” was the largest. In the aspect of “speaking ability”, the highest score was for “It has become easier for me to chat and communicate with others”, with the increase in score for “I am more willing to share my feedback on news articles on the stage” being the largest. In the aspect of “reading ability”, the highest score was observed for “I read faster” and “I can catch the key points in news articles”; the score for “I can catch the key points in news articles” also improved most greatly. In the aspect of “writing ability”, both “I have learned more words and phrases” and “I am more able to stick to the topic when writing a composition, a weekly journal or worksheet” were given the highest score, and the increase in score for “I am more able to stick to the topic when writing a composition, a weekly journal or worksheet” was also the largest. Based on the above findings, this study proposed suggestions for newspaper reading classes and educational institutions. Firstly, experimental newspaper reading classes can adopt the learning community-based approach in newspaper reading education, allowing students to freely discuss and express opinions. Secondly, during course development, educational institutions could incorporate newspaper reading education with Mandarin Daily News as the material, so as to meet the requirements for the basic Chinese language abilities, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Thirdly, each students participating in the research of newspaper reading education should be given a newspaper every day. Fourthly, to gain a deeper understanding of the formation of a newspaper reading habit, research of related topics should be conducted following the newspaper reading education.
