The Effect of Extensive Reading on Reading Ability of Low Level Students in EFL Classrooms

Traditionally, translation, analysis of structure, contextual analysis and sub-skills practicing are the major course in EFL reading classrooms, where learners decode their text, and which wearies them a lot. To make reading more enjoyable and effective, a great number of studies have examined the effect of extensive reading. Extensive reading places an emphasis on getting overall meaning of the text, not unraveling individual words, sentences or structure. It is essential to set up a class library with graded readers of several levels, and students should read self-selected books. Through extensive exposure to English under pleasurable environment, low level students and reluctant readers become more motivated. Research on extensive reading has significant and positive findings on reading ability and other language proficiency.
