被遺忘的帳篷傳教--美國宣教士花翹奇博士(Rev. George Alexander Hudson)在臺灣的宣教事業(1951-1966)

摘要


花翹奇,半世紀前台灣有人稱呼他為花博士、花牧師,以及花祥,而今日這個名字幾乎已被遺忘了,更何況是他在台灣的事蹟了。本文以多數長老教會對他的稱呼--「花博士」為其稱謂。清末基督傳教解禁後,美國的基督宗派積極來到中國傳教,花博士的父母親得到喬治亞州教會的支持,於1893年受到美國長老會派往中國傳教;傳教之前接受漢文學習期間,1894年在浙江嘉興生下了花博士。花博士的成長階段皆由母親教育,16歲時回到美國接受大學教育、完成神學學位,亦獲得教會支持下,返回中國浙江,陪同父母經營嘉興的宣教事業。 二戰後共產黨赤化東亞時期,花博士於1949年被中國共產黨驅逐回美,後因北韓共產黨在1950年掀起韓戰,美軍駐防台灣後,他於1951年夏秋之際來到台灣。花博士居住在淡水小鎮,兼在台灣的傳教基地,得到臺灣基督長老教會在全省的教會協助下,環島傳播福音;他前往沒有教會的地區,開拓新慕道友、協助信徒成立佈道所及教會,對二戰後台灣基督宗教的衰落到復興,深具貢獻。他停留台灣近14年,傳教事蹟散佈於各地長老教會的紀念史冊內。最重要的事蹟,臺灣基督長老教會推行倍加運動期間,他以美南差會傳教師的身份,支持經濟匱乏的教會,捐獻金錢蓋新教堂,獲得捐款的教會或佈道所超過50所。 1953年10月起至1966年9月之間,花博士延續了他父親在中國的「帳篷傳教」,以這種罕見的佈道方式,組成了「福音會幕佈道團」前往台灣各地傳道,特別是搭機跨海到澎湖以及數次前往花蓮。佈道團來到城市、進入農村,利用公園、學校、廟前廣場以及教堂前空地,搭起1或2個帳篷。在帳棚內,日間舉辦婦女基督課、幼兒主日學,夜間則舉辦成人的「大佈道」。在全台舉辦129場佈道會,吸引聽道的民眾達130萬人次,其中35000人簽名決志,最終3400人受洗加入教會。1966年花博士在新竹縣政府後面廣場後,完成在台灣的最後一場佈道大會後,年底因屆齡退休,返回美國。

George Alexander Hudson was called Dr. Hudson, Preacher Hudson or Hudson half century ago, but now the name is almost forgotten, none to say what he had done in Taiwan. In this thesis, Dr. Hudson is the name used as most of the Presbyterian Churches called him in Taiwan. American Christianity started preaching actively after the Christian mission was lifted in the late Qing Dynasty. Dr. Hudson's parents, supported by the Independent Presbyterian Church of Savannah, Georgia were appointed missionaries preaching in China in 1893. Dr. Hudson was born in 1894 during the the time his parents were learning Chinese in Jiaxing, Zhejiang before their preaching. Dr. Hudson was educated by his mother, until he was 16. He returned to the United States to receive university education and completed his theology degree in 1918. Dr. Hudson, as a missionary, supported by the Independent Presbyterian Church of Savannah, Georgia returned to Jiaxing preaching with his parents. During the Communist Party redeemed the East Asian period after the Second World War, Dr. Hudson was expelled back to the United States by the Chinese Communist Party in 1949. In 1950, Korean War broke out by the North Korean Communist, US military stationed in Taiwan and Dr. Hudson came to Taiwan in 1951 and stayed in Tamsui town, which was his mission base. With the support of the Presbyterian Churches, he travelled for Tent Evangelism around Taiwan. The Tent Evangelism he worked attracted huge crowds to know Christ and helped to organize and built churches and chapels. Dr. Hudson worked very hard and had a great contribution to the decline and rejuvenation of Taiwan's Christianity after World War Ⅱ. He stayed in Taiwan for nearly 14 years, his missionary storied are scattered throughout the commemorative annals of the Presbyterian churches. in Taiwan. The most important one is to organize and build more than 50 churches with his donation and tent campaigns as a missionary of American Presbyterians (South) in Taiwan, meanwhile "P.K.U"(Poe Ka Un-tong)of the Presbyterian Churches had been held in Taiwan. Dr. Hudson preached with the Tent Evangelism,rare in Taiwan, adopted from the way how his father did in China. He conducted evangelism campaigns around Taiwan from Oct. 1953 to Sept. 1966, especially in Penghu, small island across strait and in Hualian many times by flight. The evangelism campaign with one or two tents set up in the park, school, and the open space in front of the churches or temples in cities and villages. There were women's Christian classes and children's Sunday school during the day and big sermons for adults at night. He conducted 129 evangelism campaigns and attracted 1.3 million people in total, including 35000 determined to believe in the Lord and 3400 baptized into Christ. The last evangelism campaign was held at the square behind the Hsinchu City Hall in 1966. Then Dr. Hudson returned to the U.S. because of his retirement.
