The aim of the study was to develop a functional communication assessment tool for people with aphasia, which applies to the daily activities in Taiwan, and to evaluate its validity and reliability. The study was conducted in two phases. The main purpose of study one was to establish the Functional Communication Assessment for Adults with Aphasia. The pretest version was established after expert panel review and multiple revisions, and was administered to 4 healthy and 4 aphasic participants. Revision was conducted again according to test results and feedback received from participants, and then the final version of the Functional Communication Assessment for Adults with Aphasia was accomplished. In study two, a total of 14 participants with aphasia were administered the Functional Communication Assessment for Adults with Aphasia, and the validity and reliability of this new evaluation tool was assessed. The Functional Communication Assessment for Adults with Aphasia demonstrated high level of internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.86~0.95), excellent inter-rater reliability (ICC = 1.0) and intra-rater reliability (ICC = 0.965~0.999). In addition, correlation between whole-test and subtests was moderate to high (Kendall tau = 0.66~0.94), indicated acceptable construct validity. Correlation between the Function Communication Assessment for Adults with aphasia and the Concise Chinese Aphasia Test (CCAT) revealed a good criterion-related validity (Kendall tau = 0.77). In summary, results of this study suggested that the Functional Communication Assessment for Adults with aphasia displayed satisfactory validity and reliability that may be used in clinical settings or related research, and may enhance the convenience of assessing functional communication in aphasic adults in Taiwan as well.
