In the past two years, the notion of resilience has received much attention again due to the pandemic outbreak. Such unexpected challenge has affected people globally and personally, which caught most people off guard and experience different extents of disruption in their daily lives. Yet, despite being unprepared for the crisis, some people have shown a rapid adaptation. To examine this phenomenon, this study adopted Fredrickson (2001)’s broaden-and-build theory to explain the cultivation of resilience in daily life. Furthermore, this study aimed to explore whether the hope emotion induced by inspirational media, in particular, underdog narrative, could positively influence cultivation. Moreover, this study also included approach motivation to test the mediation effect between hope and resilience. This experimental study recruited 76 participants and divided them into two groups: the underdog and the nature group. Results show that viewing the underdog narrative can induce hope emotion which can improve one’s resilience. Furthermore, the findings also revealed that approach motivation partially mediates the relationship between hope emotion and resilience. In conclusion, this study helps to understand the underlying mechanism of watching inspirational media and its psychological impact on the viewers.
