Development of gait analysis system for Parkinson disease patient in turning

In this thesis, we have designed a analysis system which can research about turning and irregular gait for Parkinson’s disease (PD) in walking. Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system. This disease affects the movements and produces some motor symptoms. Targeted attention in combination with a cue to enhance gait have been well-established, but the evidence is limited when it is applied to alleviate gait problems on turning. The analysis system consisted of sensors and software programs is low-cost and portable. Sensors include a wireless gyroscope, two wireless force sensitive resistors, and a laser scanner. The software programs could save and analyze data at the same time. Walking speeds, stride length, and cadence of the non-cued and cued gait are the main measures of gait performance. Five normal people walked the designed path three times to analyze consistence and accuracy of the system. We could know that R2 of time was 0.99 and R2 of steps number was 1 by comparing the results of the system analyzed with video. Also, the system could differentiate between normal steps and unusual steps.
