Over the years, traffic volume has increased rapidly with small-size vehicles becoming the frequently seen means of transportation for most. When one adds up this condition into a population as intense as Taiwan it creates a promising opportunity for new ideas that could replace our means of daily commuting. Car- pooling is a concept that already exists for several decades but has, as far as we know, not been widely practiced and accepted by the society. Most car pools happen among friends, peers, close friend or classmates, and the arrangements are made by verbal means. This abstract aims at enlightening its readers that carpooling, if utilized and programmed properly, can create a win-win situation for the people, the environment and the government. To make this happen, the car pool system will require a user to connect to the car pooling system via the Internet and obtain the best real-time arrangement matching his conditions. A “user” in this abstract refers to either the owner of the vehicle or the hunting passenger. Architecture of existing carpooling platforms may include a user’s route, estimated time or departure, pick-up places, pricing and so on. It is up to the user to search for the driver or passenger that best matches his conditions. For this type of arrangement to happen would entail a lot of wasted time, risk of security, and inefficient process – resulting in the low interest level from the public. Our research aims to introduce an improvised method to prevailing conditions by applying the boundary concept for every registered carpooling service. This filters out useless information and only keeps the destinations, locations, or perimeters specified by the user on the Internet. With the help of geographic information system, the search for a matching service and/or user becomes a fully automated experience. The matching service starts from the selected time and place entered by the user into the system. Calculation of the most effective route and cost sharing automatically follows – thereby eliminating the necessity for passengers to bargain for lesser costs. To find out how feasible this concept is, we experimented and designed a system architecture that calculated the carpool users’ demands and their preferred system environment. Indeed the results proved that the concept promises to be useful in providing a convenient platform for car pool users. Not only does it reduce the matching processing time and take into consideration one’s budget / preference but also keeps in mind the security of both passenger and drivers on every car pool trip.
