To understand the effects of the number and the location of light-dot defects on the perception of picture quality, the theoretical background of human visual systems and the ISO 13406-2 standard were reviewed in the research. A gaze tracking system and a questionnaire were applied as the tools for collecting the data. An experiment with two phases was designed. In the first phase, three areas with the same size from the center to the periphery were identified with different durations of gaze. In the second phase, screens with different picture qualities in terms of the number and the location of light-dot defects were designed for subjects to make pairwise comparisons. Results showed that picture qualities were decreased as the number of defects was increased, and as the defects were near the center area of the screen. A partial interaction effect was also found between the number and the location of the defects. That is, some picture qualities of screens with more number of defects but located in the peripheral area were better than the ones with less number of defects but located in the central area.
