According to the epidemiology statistics of 2012 by the Department of Health in Taiwan, diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death, and 95% patients with diabetes are classified as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Konjac Glucomannan (KGM) is a water-soluble dietary fiber which has been proven to improve blood sugar and lipids in patients with T2DM as a heath supplements in previous studies. This study is a positive-controlled, randomized, and single-blind parallel clinical trial. Totally 42 patients with T2DM concomitant with dyslipidemia were recruited, 4 were refused and 2 were excluded by biochemical values. 36 subjects were randomized into three groups, in the intervention group we used noodles containing 2 g KGM with 2 g in each piece as staple food for 12 weeks. Noodles without KGM were supplied in the positive control group for 12 weeks. There was no intervention in the blank control group. All participants maintained the original medical treatments and dietary habit. Any changing in anthropometry and biochemical data were measured and compared before and after trial in the end of study. After 12 weeks of clinical trial in Saint Mary’s Hospital Luodong, there were significantly decreases in waist ( p = 0.008 ) between the KGM intervention group and without-KGM group. The body weight (p = 0.022), BMI ( p = 0.025 ), waist ( p = 0.003 ) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level was also significantly decreased ( p = 0.036 ) in the KGM group. However, there was no difference in serum lipids.
