The effects of soy protein on patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

In Taiwan, the issue of NAFLD is important which’s prevalence is about 11.4% ~ 41%. This study is a single arm, open labeled, 12 weeks clinical trial to evaluate the effect of soy protein supplementation on ALT function. Supplements were consumed as a beverage once daily in breakfast. Participants were provided the treatment for 12 weeks and keep the original dietary behavior and lifestyle. The examination includes blood biochemical parameters, fibroscan and gut microflora. A total of 28 patients enrolled in this study. Each patient completed blood examination, physical examination, FibroScan test, and diet questionnaire before and after soy protein treatment. The comparisons of examination values between patients before and after soy protein treatment showed that there were significant difference on ALT, HDL- cholesterol and IGFBP-3. Soy protein supplementations significantly reduced the ALT level in 25 NAFLD patients. This study also showed that soy protein could improve the clinical characteristics related with metabolic syndrome.
