Self-Performance of Online Stages -- Audience Research of Online Video Sharing Websites

The main connotation of Web2.0 not only refers to the interpersonal communication, but also emphasizes the self-presentation of audiences. By means of the popularization of video devices, simple operation, and unrestrained ideas, video sharing websites provide many unique places for audience’s self-presentation. Then, showing audience’s self-presentation through “the video images” has become a trend. Since the literature and research about video sharing websites as well as the applied theories in this field are scarce, this dissertation employed the method called ”Netnogrophy” to combine the online observation and the offline interviews to discuss how the audiences present themselves on video sharing websites, and applied Spectacle/Performance Paradigm to analyze the circumstances of online performance. Furthermore, this thesis connected with the conversation topic of “gender-switch performance” illustrated how the presenters implement body display to produce the making up connotation of self-construction. The research found that interpersonal communications in daily life have influenced on users’ self-presentation. Family was crucial to the development of presenter’s personality. In addition, the responses from friends and peers decided whether they could be identified or not. And the mainstream consensuses of our society are the standard of self-performance. Meanwhile, the present research identified the meaning of Spectacle/Performance Paradigm, which highlights that “the video images” induce audiences to present themselves and provide the way to imitate. The presenters either directly or indirectly chose the appropriate ways by contacting various media contents. Further, they performed themselves on the platform called “online stages”. Moreover, the presenters constructed and revised themselves through the self-reflection and represented the narcissistic characteristic simultaneously. On the other hand, those video sharing websites enabled the gender-switch performances to have diverse languages and styles, from costumes, voices to limb actions, playing the sexual symbols on the body display of opposite gender, revealing the term “gender is a role of performance”, disclosing a game of body disguise and producing the making up connotation of self-pleasure.
