Cinema Closing Today, a romantic comedy with a life changing aspect, is the story of a woman who is disillusioned by her white-collar life and, in the course of the screenplay, grows to make the decision of leaving her current job and in the end opens her own coffee shop. Remy, a young woman with a plan for her life, has always been a good student and a loyal employee, but recently she starts to have the sinking feeling of dissatisfaction with her life. On the outside, the reason for her discontent is her ruthless boss-Director. In fact, the Director symbolizes Remy's lack of satisfaction with herself. She got herself trapped into a system of benefits of a stable job that guarantees her a very comfortable life. Moreover, she cannot leave the job because Michal, her loved one, works there too. When he is transferred to Poland, the need for staying at the job even accelerates because, without the job and the salary it brings, she cannot afford the bright future Michal has planned for them. As a result, Remy holds her tongue and goes on with her work. Although her writing horoscopes demonstrated her irrationality and spontaneity, which she is about to discover with the help of Oskar, the ticket-seller/manager of a cinema, who represents the aspects of freedom and non-conformism in the story. Remy meets Oskar when she is still focused on staying at the job and being recognized by her boss as a capable employee, but her accepting to help Oskar make coffee at the cinema shows her underlying need to get off the life train she found herself traveling on. The contrast between these two environments, office and cinema, shows us two possible directions Remy could go. The first environment seemingly provides for everything she needs, the latter only serves her for a specified time, but the roles of the two environments get reversed by the end and Remy can start a new chapter in her life. At the beginning of the story Remy is not ready to change her career, i.e., to switch from a prestigious career to a rather lower-class job of running a coffee shop, however, she discovers her true nature and happiness at the cinema while making coffee. After many obstacles she is ready to begin a new life. In the essay on Cinema Closing Today I analyze the screenplay and its structure (including the Three-Act Structure, logline and characters). I also discuss the genre of film comedy and romantic comedy with regard to the Cinema Closing Today. I include conclusions of various studies to illustrate the difficulties of an occupational choice. I also examine the process of writing the screenplay from the first idea to the final draft. I believe that the screenplay possesses elements that could draw the audiences' attention. The main character in this screenplay is believable and easy to identify with for many women, because Remy, as well as many of the female spectators, work in an office, dislike their job, but are not ready to leave the stable job and the benefits it brings. The story is entertaining and original. It is a light comedy that centers on Remy/Director confrontations, and Remy/Oskar budding relationship. In the future I would like to spend some time on collecting new ideas and getting more experience in life and in writing, so that I can improve as a person and as a writer. I would also love to try writing fiction.
