Theory of Evolution is a short film about Sam Fong, a clerk of an advertisement company. In the commercial society nowadays, the old values have been abandoned. Sam’s boss believes in a new trend that can get him more money and power. Sam was divorced from his wife and needs to raise his son by himself. He also needs to bear the pressure and insult from his boss. In this situation, Sam finds a chance to choose his own ‘evolution’, after he has witnessed his colleague’s strike against his boss. In this essay, I will introduce my motivation and process of making this film. I will support my viewpoint by citing Darwin’s ‘Theory of Evolution’, which had been developed into social darwinism. Some news reports and literature will also be used to support my thesis that class difference causes social conflict and hidden violence. Personally, I used to work in a TV station. This experience gives me a chance to conduct a participatory observation and in-depth interviews. I will select some film classics with similar genre and theme to make comparison and contrast with my film. The creating process of this film will also be discussed. Finally, I will illustrate the aesthetics of this film in acting, cinematography & lighting, sound design, production design, and editing categories. In short, I will explain how I match the content with the form in this film.
