Wu Dao: Teaching Creative Dance Based on Chinese Martial Arts

The purpose of this study is to use the Chinese martial arts as a theme to design a creative dance curriculum in a junior high school performing arts class, and then to survey the teaching process and its effectiveness in order to further promote teachers’ self-reflection and growth. This study applied the action research method, and 32 students (17 males and 15 females) of a 7th grade class were selected as the taught targets at Luodong Junior High School in Taiwan, where the researcher teaches. Data collection and analysis were accomplished through video/audio recordings, class observation and reflection journal, peer review, student evaluations and feedback, and suggestions from professionals. All collected materials enables the researcher to explore and discuss the teaching effect from various dimensions including the choice of theme, the performance of students, the teacher’s role, teaching methods and so on. The study finds that Chinese martial arts is a very suitable theme for physical exploration in performing arts class because students are familiar with it. Student-centered teaching activities should be encouraged and well organized to strengthen the interactions between teachers and students. In addition, creative dance is a feasible teaching strategy to popularize dance education in the general school setting. Through the materials that students are interested in, and with the use of a heuristic teaching method provided by the teacher, the students are willing to take the initiative to explore their own bodies. The research result also reveals when students do not have enough body experiences, they are lack of confidence in creating their own body movements; however, peer cooperation helped them learn and perform the movements better. Therefore, in order to achieve teaching objectives, the teacher has to be very open-minded and to provide students with a more self-motivated learning environment so that students are able to complete an assigned task. Based on the findings of the study, it is expected that in the future this study can be a reference for related studies and for teachers, especially performing arts teachers who may think of Chinese martial arts as theme to develop their curriculum. Both thematic teaching and creative dance which are student-centered will be valued and could be taken seriously in the process of education for arts teachers. Furthermore, performing arts will become very important classes for students to experience through regular schedules, appropriate credit hours, sound and safe environment, and multiple assessments in nine-year integrated curriculum in Taiwan.
