This paper describes an Internship Report at Small Idea Bookstore (小小書房) and a research on independent bookstores in Taiwan. As an Intern I organized two seminars in which I worked with the institutional support of Small Idea’s director. One of the seminars was about contemporary Latin American writers and the second one was a Poetry workshop. Observation was carried out during the 6-month internship at Small Idea Bookstore and done through an “observer as participant” approach. Likewise, the research had developed a comprehensive understanding of the approaches to marketing and branding adopted by independent bookstores’ managers in Taiwan , as well as their implementation. For which semi-structured interviews were carried out with experts – a variety of managers– in the book trade. These two projects serve as examples of how independent bookstores play an indispensable role in Taiwan society as cultural spaces. It has built upon the existing scholarly material available in these fields, as well as extending and developing research in the new academic field of bookselling. There is considerable scope for further investigation..
