Photojournalism Exhibition Mechanism - A Case Study of World Press Photo in Amsterdam, Netherlands

Initially, the content of the exhibition came from news photos used in all kinds of news media in history; until today, it mostly includes results of contests and winners of photojournalism. This case study uses exhibition of photojournalism as the main target, discussing about the relationship between photojournalism and the society, and also how the images are displayed by the exhibition mechanism. This case study focuses on the aspect of exhibition mechanism, rationalizing how photojournalism becomes the purpose and significance of the exhibition. Take the exhibition of highly professional and famous World Press Photo as an example, this case study attempts to find out the significance, categories of photojournalism, themes displayed, and process and method of the exhibition. It is found in the case study that the contests and exhibition launched by the World Press Photo increases the interaction between photojournalism in the world and helps to promote it. And also, the exhibition can be seen as an integration of the view points from the photographer and the judges. Besides consenting with the profession and belief of the exhibition, this case study also questions the ideal of “changing the world through photojournalism”, and thus propels us to rethink about the limitation of photojournalism in contests and financial profits. It is very important that the exhibition shows diversity of photography, displaying works from all kinds of aspect, in order to communicate with people in the world.
