台灣觀光導覽文宣翻譯研究:理論與實務

A Study of English Translation of Taiwan’s Tourist Guides: Theory and Practice

摘要


台灣觀光業每年為經濟市場帶進大把的外匯收入,根據交通部觀光局針對離境旅客進行「來台旅客消費及動向調查」,結果顯示高達五成七的旅客來台前,曾看過台灣觀光相關文宣。因此,台灣旅遊觀光文宣的英譯文本,能否符合外國旅客的期望並有效誘發旅客來台動機,扮演著相當重要的地位。然而,筆者卻發現目前除了交通部觀光局提供旅遊英譯文之外,坊間私人出版社和其他政府相關部門也因受委託而加入編輯與發行的行列,因此,造成產出的譯文品質參差不齊,使得英譯旅遊文本不能發揮其應有的指導性與實用性。因此,本論文將中英對照旅遊導覽文宣,分成三大主題:地理劃分、在地特色、餐飲文化,並挑出有瑕疵的譯文當例子,而影響例句翻譯錯誤的因素又分成:習慣性受母語影響、一時疏忽受一般語文用法影響和存在各式各樣錯誤譯文的綜論。筆者先介紹中英語法的差異,然後在討論每個例句時搭配母語外譯和目的論理論,以及使用歸化和異化之翻譯策略穿插評析,並在最後提出筆者的建議譯文,希望從個案討論與分析中,提出一些可供從事旅遊翻譯等相關人員實務上的參考。

Taiwan tourism industry has brought in lots of International Tourism Receipts every year. According to Taiwan Tourism Bureau’s “Annual Survey Report on Visitors Expenditure and Trends in Taiwan”, it shows that 57% of foreign travelers in Taiwan have read English brochures about Taiwan before going abroad. Therefore, English version of Taiwan’s tourist guides plays a key role to attract foreigners to come to Taiwan. However, in addition to Taiwan Tourism Bureau, there are many private publishers and tourism-related departments of the government, getting involved in translating and editing, which result in different quality of translation in English version. Mistranslated information that could not guide travelers properly should be corrected. These improper translations are divided into three themes: geography, local specialty, and cuisine culture. Each theme will be given various examples to show translation errors, affected, in my opinion, by three factors: mother language, different usages of second language, and mixed factors. First, syntactic differences between Chinese and English are introduced. Then, each example is reviewed by inverse translation, skopos theory, as well as domestication and foreignization. In the end of each example, advised translation will be provided as a reference for future translators in tourism industry.
