中譯英銜接手段對連貫的影響: 以《琦君散文選中英對照》為例

摘要


現今的翻譯研究皆以語篇為基本單位,而銜接與連貫更是語篇形成的兩大要素,兩者的關係密不可分。研究指出銜接是達成語篇連貫的必要因素之一。中文與英文有著極為相似的銜接方法,但由於語言的差異,運用銜接的方式有所不同。本研究採用琦君散文選中英對照一書為文本,來探討語篇中銜接與連貫的關係。本論文分成五章。首章為緒論,說明本研究的動機、目的、方法與問題。第二章為文獻探討,檢視學者對銜接與連貫的詮釋。第三章探討中英翻譯中原文與譯文銜接手段的差異。利用Halliday與Hasan的銜接理論,將原文與譯文中使用指涉(reference)、替代(substitutlon)、省略(ellipsis)、連接詞(conjunction)、辭彙銜接(lexical cohesion)的部分做比較。第四章導入Lautamatti的主題結構分析(topical structure analysis),辨識原文與譯文語篇中各句主題的關係,並審視譯者在使用銜接手段翻譯時,對主題結構的影響。第五章為結論與建議。研究《琦君散文選中英對照》的銜接與連貫的呈現,除讓筆者有機會細讀優秀譯者的作品外,更期望透過對原文及譯文的觀察結果,能對爾後的散文翻譯略有貢獻。

In recent years, discourse has become the fundamental unit for conducting translation studies. Cohesion and coherence are two important factors in the discourse-forming process, and they are closely related to each other. Previous studies have indicated that cohesion is one of the factors of coherence. Although Chinese and English share similar types of cohesive devices, the methods of using cohesive ties differ because of the differences between the two languages. This thesis performs a case study on cohesion and coherence, based on the book Chi Chun: Proses in Chinese and English. This thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter One introduces the author’s motivation, goals, methods and questions for writing this thesis. Chapter Two reviews the literature on cohesion and coherence. In Chapter Three, Qi Jun’s essays are analyzed based on Halliday and Hasan’s theory of cohesion. This chapter demonstrates the similar and different uses of cohesive devices in Chinese ST and English TT. Cohesive devices, according to Halliday and Hasan, are categorized into reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction and lexical cohesion. In Chapter Four, Lautamatti’s topical structure analysis is employed to identify the relations of sentences in a discourse and to examine the impact of cohesive devices on coherence. Chapter Five presents the author’s conclusions and suggestions. It is hoped that the results of this thesis can contribute to prose translation.
