Knowledge has recently been recognized as one of the important resources for enhancing competition ability in organizational management. In high knowledge-intensive industries, such as health care organizations, where resources are almost exclusively knowledge-based, and the knowledge itself plays a significant role. However, the accelerated advanced technology development in ophthalmology over the past decades has results in the invention of operational methods and machines which increased the variability of eye care. The rising aging population and near-sighted people demand better eye care. The demand of cataract and refractive surgeries has advanced to a great extend. The rapid updating and accumulating trend of medical knowledge, the cost of high-tech devices as well as the restriction of National Health Insurance have also resulted in the unstable quality of eye care of different clinics. This demands the practice of knowledge management in order to maintain and enhance the high quality of eye care specialties. This research studied how the knowledge could be acquired, transmitted, replicated, and applied through knowledge management in a company which stablished its chain of clinics based on a common business processes among different franchised clinics linked by shared information infrastructure. In this innovative process, Universal Vision Biotechnology CO.,LTD has achieved rapid development of service capacity and quality, fulfilled the rising market of refractive surgery, accumulated valuable experiences and consolidated practical information further by knowledge management. Thus, it also raised the barrier against competitors. This case study reveals that the achievement of Universal Vision Biotechnology CO., LTD mainly coming from its successful knowledge management, including the effective interaction between knowledge of medical services and business services which could compensate each other to make optimal benefits. This study could serve as an example for any other enterprises which want to devote themselves to knowledge management initiatives.
