Explore the symbolic culture and space transplantation between National Taiwan University Campus and Koo Chen-Fu Memorial Library

Koo Chen-Fu Memorial Library, affiliated with the teaching research building of the College of Social Sciences at National Taiwan University is the first campus building work in Taiwan to be created by Japanese architect Toyo Ito. This study thus explores how the symbolic culture in the context of globalization enters the university campus, which is like a tiny city in this case. In the 1930s, the east-west axis avenue in Taipei Imperial University took shape, and afterwards the conversion of political power occurred. In 1982, the planning group of National Taiwan University Campus was set up, and construction of the main library was completed in 1998, which has become the end scenery of this axis avenue. The library represents the university spirit, and when the case project of this study was completed in 2013, the architect also chose a library as the main axis of the space performance and obtained a public art qualification in Taiwan for this building. Since then, the college library has become a public-level infrastructure of university campus. The open-self reading room generated in cooperation with geometric calculus has brought an unprecedented library space experience for Taiwan. This study demonstrates the space transcendence and symbolic implication of the case study by tracing the library as a kind of building type as well as Taiwan’s modernization development of a library. Aside from the building of College of Social Sciences, as an international architect Toyo Ito has 5 space-related works of various building types throughout Taiwan. When a building has attracted the world’s attention through competition in physical height and engineering technology, it has already been silently transferred to the architect’s reputation and broken through time and space limits in diversified communication media to further accelerate this process. Because a building has the function of fashion-forward aesthetics of art, this study used the development of a library building to sort out the architect’s relevant theories and space experiment, followed Toyo Ito’s building practice, and discussed historical clues to explore his influential buildings. In combination with the transformation of the development mechanism of National Taiwan University Campus, this study has clarified the whole story of the world-famous international architect, so as to provide a way to reflect on the space transplantation of start architects.
