本研究旨在探討愛麗絲夢遊仙境譯本在處理「建立人物性格」和「對照真實世界」兩種功能的文字遊戲時,如何因不同目標讀者採取不同的翻譯策略。「建立人物性格」是藉由文字遊戲來塑造角色特質。「對照真實世界」則是透過文字遊戲創造出現實和非現實世界的強烈對比。這兩類文字遊戲在故事中扮演了重要的角色,賦予了愛麗絲夢遊仙境幻想文學的特性。為了探討兩類文字遊戲的翻譯策略,研究者回到文字遊戲中創造歧異性的機制-互文性。藉由探討譯本如何透過相似性和鄰近性來建構兩類文字遊戲中的互文關係,研究者發現譯文中再創的文字遊戲互文關係會因其目標讀者群而發展出不同的翻譯策略。
The aim of this research is to investigate the translation strategies of wordplay in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (AAIW) for different intended readers, with a specific focus on the two functions of wordplay: ‘building characters’ and ‘mirroring the real world’. ‘Building character’ is the employment of wordplay as a tool to set up characters’ personality. ‘Mirroring the real world’, on the other hand, is to present a sharp contrast between the natural and supernatural worlds. The two kinds of wordplay are common in AAIW, and are cornerstone that facilitate the fantastic nature of story. To investigate the translation strategies of these two types of wordplay, the present researcher goes back to the mechanism that enables the ambivalence in the wordplay, and hence the two functions, which is--intertextuality. By examining the two types of wordplay with the fundamental operations that create intertextual relation, namely, similarity and contiguity, the present researcher argues that the representation of intertextual relations in the wordplay is affected by the different intended reader groups.
