bstract In this design thesis, “H2OTEL–SPA Resort,” we constructed an exclusive spa resort in Yilan for a busy client with a love of humanities and classical Chinese gardens. We aimed to use interior design to apply the design of ancient Chinese gardens to a modern space within the constraints of the existing buildings’ beam structure. The mixture of new and old and the spacious atmosphere can enable people to experience the slow lifestyle of the Chinese intellectuals. Our primary methods for design creation were literature analyses, field research, case studies, and design experiments. We built the private spa resort in the suburb of a city to provide people who are accustomed to a fast-paced life during the weekdays with a recreational place separate from urban life and a novel life and space experience. By experiencing the peace, elegance, leisure, and fun of Chinese intellectuals, people can find balance in life. This design study produced the following conclusions: (1)The transformation classical of Chinese garden design principles into modern spaces; (2)The transformation of water from the classical Chinese gardens into modern SPA resort.
