Previous research had shown that affective engagement strategy can predict couples’ relationships. However, few studies discussed the impact of differences in physiological synchronization between couples on interpersonal emotion regulation strategy. The main purpose of the present study is to examine whether physiological synchronization can moderate the relationship between affective engagement strategy and couples’ relationships. We hypothesized that affective engagement strategy will increase couples’ relationships, and physiological synchronization may strengthen that affective engagement strategy increase couples’ relationships. Participants were 35 couples. They completed the affective engagement strategy use scale, the interactive quality scale and the relationship quality scale, while wearing a physiological feedback device to record the skin conductivity changes when the partner comforts each other. The results showed that skin conductivity physiological synchronization can moderate the relationship between affective engagement strategy and couples’ interaction quality. Under high physiological synchronization, the affective engagement strategy can positively predict complainer's interaction quality, however in the case of low physiological synchronization, the affective engagement strategy cannot predict the complainer's interaction quality and relationship quality. This study demonstrated that physiological synchronization plays a crucial role in the relationship between affective engagement strategy and interaction quality, and advised couples on strategies for regulating emotions.
