歐文編排形式與印刷紋樣之研究 —以Kelmscott Press之The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer為例

摘要


Kelmscott Press於19世紀末出版之《喬叟作品集》,被譽為世界三大美書中排列為首的書籍,隨後成為眾多出版商的典範。在這出版物的典範中,編排形式與版面豐富的紋樣裝飾儼然成為構成書籍之美的重要因素,本研究主要探討喬叟作品集的版面編排結構及編輯紋樣之造形表現,其版面視覺與古籍形態息息相關,本研究以文獻分析法為主軸,回歸歷史的原點,期盼以更完整的方式理解其發展與變遷,並輔以視覺檢測的方式得知版面圖文密度之差異,再針對不同種類之紋樣造形加以解析,此一部分包括視覺性造形、象徵性造形、機能性造形,以探究不同的紋樣所富含的象徵意義,進而理解紋樣的構成原理與應用之方式。 本研究結果為:以喬叟作品集為主軸,根據文獻分析結果,可將相關之版面形式與古典紋樣造形區分為五個時期,旨在探究不同的時代中,形成的版面元素與編輯紋樣之差異性,以及所衍生的視覺效果。整體而言,古典書籍的視覺表現,其裝飾性大,機能性小;現代書籍則機能性大,裝飾性小。另外,針對喬叟作品集之紋樣造形,區分為內延意義與外延意義,外延意義呈現於視覺效果與機能,內延意義則取決於文化內涵。藉由本研究,使逐漸流失的古典書籍樣貌,得以再設計的觀點探究其脈絡及視覺表現,進而提供現代設計在文化元素應用之參考。

“The Works of the Geoffrey Chaucer” published by the Kelmscott Press at the end of 19th century is praised to be one of the best book in the world, and has become a great example for other publishers. As a great example in publishing industry, a well designed layout and abundant ornament are essential to composite the beauty of books. This study is mainly focus on layout design structure of “The Works of the Geoffrey Chaucer” and its vision effect connection with ancient books. Methodology of this study is based on literature review, by reviewing back the history of the development and evolution of layout design. Vision test is applied to analyze the density difference between text and ornament, and ornament can be divided into several different models, including visional model, symbolical model, and functional model. By studying the meaning of each symbol behind different ornament, we hope to understand the concept of ornament composition and its application method. Based on “The Works of the Geoffrey Chaucer” and other literature review, the development of layout and classical ornament can be divided into five ages. In each age, we can see the development of layout formation elements and ornament editing changed throughout the time. In general, the visual effects of classic books have more decorative effect than functional effect, which is opposite to modern books. In addition, the spirit of ornament from “The Works of the Geoffrey Chaucer” can be distinguished into external and internal. The external spirit appears on visual effect and its functionality, where the internal spirit depends on culture itself. In the end, this study is meant to represent the concept and beauty of classic books, in order to provide a good reference in modern design on culture elements application.
