Under the impact of increasing global competition and facing more requirements from customers, it is necessary to have excellent product quality and outstanding development of new products to obtain stable customers and orders; therefore, the company may have a position in such a highly competitive and severe market. In order to make the company sustainable and to cope with the strong global environment, the company is forced to seek continuous improvement, to eliminate the waste in the process, to reduce the production cost, to enhance the competitiveness of the product, and thus enhance the enterprise strength. In this study, a TFT-LCD panel module maintenance department planned to enhance capability of an automatic optical inspection machine to correctly detect the panel line defect problem. The six-sigma methodology and DMAIC improvement process were used to find the root causes and main control factors. The method of the six-sigma system was applied to improve the hardware equipment and to set parameter values of the inspection process. The findings were validated by implementing those values in the shop floor and it showed the detection rate of line defects was effectively improved.
