Taiwan has experienced various changes and challenges over time, such as de-Japanisation and re-Sinicisation, both of which reflected in Taiwan’s music and songs. The Treaty of Shimonoseki signed between China and Japan in 1895 marked the start of Japan’s 50-year rule of Taiwan. In July 1905, the completion of Guishan Hydroelectric Power Plant in Xindian enabled the supply of electricity to Monga and Dadaocheng of Taipei City. The power system ushered in a civilized lifestyle and economic stability. After meeting their basic needs for food, clothing, housing, and transportation, Taiwanese people began paying attention to education and entertainment in pursuit of a more fulfilling life. At the time, records, movies, and radio broadcasting simultaneously affected one another and gradually prospered, signifying social prosperity and cultural progress over time. After the release of Taiwan’s first creative popular song entitled The Peach Girl in 1932, more well-known creative popular songs were created subsequently. The rise of Taiwan’s popular songs was closely related to the historical background of its society at the time. The lyrics of these songs often express true feelings of various ethnic groups or the general public, reflect temporal and spatial changes, and even epitomise Taiwanese people’s identification with their own land and nation. Exuding collective consciousness, the lyrics of Taiwan’s popular songs represent a miniature of social phenomena in Taiwan. This study attempted to conduct textual analysis of the lyrics to Taiwan’s popular songs. Soundscape, a concept of urban sociology, was used to elaborate on the visual spaces constructed by the lyrics and to reactivate the spatial memory of Taiwan in each period. The spaces described in Taiwan’s popular songs from various periods were compared to determine the context of spatial changes.
