The Formation and Changing Identity of Chinese Malaysian and Indonesian Students in National Chi Nan University, Taiwan

This thesis emloys deterritorialization and reterritorialization to discuss Malaysian and Indonesian students in Taiwan. Due to environmental change and official labelling of “overseas Chinese studnets” (Qiao-sheng), they are facing contracdiction of identity during their study in Taiwan. To deal with the identity problem, they use some of their personal everyday experiences to distinguish them from most of the Taiwanese local students, in order to create or maintain their own personal identity. In some previous studies, scholars applies deterritorialization and deterritorialization to discuss the migration of students, in this thesis, deterritorialization refers to “overseas Chinese students” enrollment institution in Taiwan. This enrollment institution implies the diminishing national boundary and border and sees all Chinese-descent students as one—overseas Chinese students. For these “overseas Chinese students”, they will find the distinctions between them and the Taiwanese local students, and to distinguish them from the latter, they have to enforce and restructure their own identity, a process similar to the concept of reterritorialization. In this thesis, I will use their everyday practices to explain their identity formation and changes. This can be divided into two dimensions: firstly, other-defined these overseas Chinese students, and secondly, the self-defined of overseas Chinese students themselves. In this study, I discover that whatever the changing and diversity of their self-identity, a negotiated and alternative identity of “Malaysian or Indonesian students studying in Taiwan” will be dominant at last.
