大學運動績優生翻轉學業困境所展現之智慧

摘要


運動績優生往往著重於專長訓練而影響學業表現,使得學業成績不盡理想,而有適應不良之情形。基於此,本研究在探究運動績優生翻轉學業困境的可能,及其中可能展現智慧。假如運動績優生可以透過翻轉學業困境並且展現智慧,將能促進他們有正向的發展。在文獻探討方面,研究先從學業適應以及所遭遇的學業困境去探討運動績優生普遍的學業困境,以及翻轉學業困境所可能展現之智慧。本研究以自評問卷網羅其認為有成功翻轉學業困境的運動績優生為訪談對象,對其進行半結構訪談,之後將訪談內容彙整成逐字稿並加以分析。研究結果顯示學業困境是運動績優生普遍面臨的問題:(一)運動績優生自認為學業落後一般生、(二)他人普遍認為運動績優生不會讀書。運動績優生所經歷的學業困境為(一)背景知識的不足、(二)對學科不感興趣而對學習產生排斥感、(三)無法適應老師的教學。此外,運動績優生確實能翻轉學業困境,並從中展現智慧。其智慧主要是透過認知上統整一般生與運動績優生的身份,在學業上開始用一般生的標準來要求自己,之後將統整的想法付諸於實際行動。在運動績優生統整實踐之後,其行動對自己或他人產生正面影響。

College students who are elite athletes often put such great emphasis on their athletic training that their academic performance is affected; this often leads to maladjustment in college. The goal of this study is to explore the possibility of overcoming academic difficulties and the related wisdom that such college athletes demonstrate. In the literature review section, this study examined difficulties generally encountered by student athletes from the perspective of adaptation, and explored the possibility of wisdom displayed through overcoming such difficulties. An open-ended questionnaire was used to identify student athletes who had overcome academic difficulties in college. A semi-structured interview was conducted with selected participants. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed on a thematic/content basis. The results showed that student athletes too often were less than confident of their academic potential compared with non-athlete students, and suffered academically from the "dumb jock" stereotype. Student athletes in general encountered academic difficulties in college which resulted from the following factors: (a) insufficient background knowledge of the subjects that they were required to study, particularly mathematics, English, and biology; (b) a lack of interest in the subject; and (c) the inability to adjust to instructors’ ways of teaching. Nevertheless, student athletes were able to overcome their academic predicaments and even display wisdom through the process. The wisdom that those student athletes displayed primarily took this form:they cognitively integrated their dual roles in college (i.e., full-time student and an elite athlete); they implemented their integrated role through their actions of serious study (e.g., sitting in the first row, memorizing the material, asking peers about academic-related questions, and asking instructors for help); and generated positive effects for themselves (e.g., passing the course, gaining a sense of accomplishment) and others (e.g., changing people’s attitudes toward student athletes) by implementing their actions.
