J. Clandinin和F.M.
The aim of this study was to explore the transformation experiences of a skateboarder. By interviewing a skateboarder and understanding his journey on a skateboard, this study examined the connection between skateboarding and the skateboarder, and how the skateboarding process transformed the participant’s inner self and life. The study used the narrative inquiry constructed by D. J. Clandinin and F. M. Connely as the methodology. The participant of this study was a 19-year old young adult, who bore heavy family responsibility and was trapped in Taiwan due to Covid pandemic. Through analysis of the interview transcript, the author composed the skateboarder’s life story. After conducting literature review and referring to author’s own experiences, this study interpreted the transformation connotation of the skateboarder. The results of the study found that transformation experiences in skateboarding came from solitude on a skateboard, conquering and surrendering to skateboarding tricks, flow experiences when finally landing a trick, and the development of personal style. Therefore, the study concluded three aspects of transformation in skateboarding: (1) Liberation and surrender. (2) Breaking through and transcendence. (3) Redefine life and expand vision. Finally, the study discussed the meaning and value of the results in counselling practice.
