探析台灣國中英語教科書英語動詞補足語結構之處理

A Study of the Treatment of English Verb Complementation in Junior High School English Textbooks in Taiwan

Verb complementation refers to the function of a phrase or clause which follows a verb and completes the meaning specification the verb implies. Thus, for example, “He deceived his father” is a grammatically correct sentence whereas “He deceived” is not. This is because “He deceived” violates the complementation pattern of the verb “deceive,” which requires a noun phrase as its object in order for its specified meaning to be complete; in contrast, “He deceived his father” satisfies this requirement. Chinese-speaking EFL (English as a foreign language) learners in Taiwan have tremendous difficulty in learning English verb complementation. Research in this area, however, is rare and scanty. As the English input and practice for English learners in Taiwan is provided mainly by English textbooks, this thesis aims to investigate how English verb complementation is treated in English textbooks for junior high school students in Taiwan. Two sets of junior high school English textbooks are chosen as targets of study: Han-Lin and Kāng-Xuān. Treatment of verb complementation in the two sets of textbooks is scrutinized on the basis of two English learner’s dictionaries, viz. Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary and Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, Quirk, R., Greenbaum, S., Leech, G., and Svartvik, J.’s (1985) ideas of verb complementation and “versatile verbs,” Huddleston and Pullum’s (2002) exposition of “verbs with multiple patterns of complementation,” and Lai’s (2013) analysis and explanation of the errors in English verb complementation made by Chinese-speaking EFL learners in Taiwan. The main finding of this thesis is that in the two sets of English textbooks, treatment of transitive/intransitive complementation of verbs is found to leave much to be desired. Pedagogical suggestions regarding how this can be improved are provided for EFL teachers and textbook compilers alike.
