Auspicious language, as well as the culture behind it, is the essence of Chinese culture. It is the result of a long process of development, and it embodies the Chinese people’s ways of living, thoughts, ideas, religion, customs, and so on. As the use of auspicious language has a significant bearing on successful cross-cultural communication, this thesis studies the teaching of auspicious language to learners of Chinese as a second language, using the three important occasions as examples: Chinese New Year, wedding, and birthday. Auspicious language, as well as the culture behind it, for Chinese New Year, wedding, and birthday, is explored; popular Chinese as a second language teaching materials are reviewed for their teaching of the auspicious language for the three chosen occasions; finally, supplementary materials are designed for the teaching of the related auspicious language to learners of Chinese as a second language. It is hoped that this study will provide a new avenue for research on auspicious language and its culture.
