Thesis Abstract This thesis aims to study mainly travel literature in the Dan Shui 淡水 area from 1629 to 1954. With a systematic approach, this thesis conducts a study on the chronological, temporal, and spatial facets of travel, in the hope of establishing a thorough discourse to gain a better understanding of travel literature in the early period of the development of Dan Shui. Chapter One illustrates the framework of this study. In expectation of analyzing the nature of travel literature in Dan Shui hidden among the historical records, this chapter clarifies the correlations and discrepancies between the historical records and literature as well as highlights the value of travel literature. Chapter Two observes the “grand waves” of travels in Dan Shui, from the introduction of the other culture (European culture) during the Dutch-Spanish Colonial Period (1629-1661), Chinese cultural traditions in Koxinga era and Qing occupation (1661-1895), to the modernized experiences transplanted from Empire Japan (1895-1945). The chapter discusses the cultural changes through three aspects: cultivation and development, cultures of groups from different origins, and customs and habits. Chapter Two also reconstructs the multi-layered cultural depth of DanShui by tracing back its historical changes of economy, tactics, tourism, and spaces. Chapter Three analyzes the different purposes of the travelers in Dan Shui: they may be dispatched officials, missionaries, observers, or travelers. Literature from these different travelers is just like a “thin stream” that becomes a long flow into the history. Chapter Four centers on the multi-layered culture. Cultural differences between the travelers and the locals clash to create yet another culture : the multi-layered culture. Through the literature from the travelers, this culture is recorded. Chapter Five concludes the thesis with an attempt to reorganize the literature from the travelers from the Dutch-Spanish Colonial Period to Japanese Occupation (1629-1945) and arrange “the layers” from the changes of time. Moreover, by analyzing its uniqueness and modernity with the elements of modern travel literature, the value of travel literature in Dan Shui will be shown.
