It is commonly known that the Confucian classics studies were popular among the scholars of the eras of Qian-long and Jia-qing of Qing Dynasty (1736-1820). Not only was Wong Fang-kang (1733-1818) among them, but also he had worked hard scholastically, so that he made remarkable academic contribution with abundant writings on Confucian classics studies, epigraphy, poetics as well as calligraphy. While Wong’s dissertations scatter in his works of various categories, his books dedicated to the study of Liji are represented by the Notes to Liji. This paper thus explores the research methodology of the Notes to Liji based on its texts, with reference made to Wong’s Fuchu-zhai Collection and related works along with existed research results. By literature review, origin tracking, generalization, analysis and summarization, the dimension of research methodology in the Notes to Liji and the academic features thereof were explored and commented. This thesis comprises five chapters. Chapter one, an introduction, delineates the research motivation, approach, objective, literature review, methodology and thesis framework of the paper. Chapter two explores Wong’s scholarship and writings, referencing the background and versions of his writing of Notes to Liji with focus on the characteristics of his composition thereof. Chapter three examines the past comments Wong cited, centering the commentaries on the Liji, books dedicated to Liji and researchers’ arguments derived from various volumes. Chapter four explores Wong’s approach to and contemplation of the Notes to Liji and investigates his research methodology of Liji as well as his thought in the study of Liji. Chapter five, conclusions, summarizes the characteristics and spirit of Wong’s study of Liji. Through the depictions, generalization and analysis of these chapters, the author hopes to be able to provide an overall understanding, without the constraint by existed evaluations, of Wong’s research methodology of his Notes to Liji and to reflect his scholastic meaning.
