The purposes of this study were to reveal the situation of the needs for the professional competency and certification requirements of the sports instructors, and to probe the difference between managers, instructors and members with different background. The subjects were the managers, instructors and members from 10 different fitness clubs in Taipei city. A self-developed questionnaire “The questionnaire of the professional abilities and certification requirements of sports trainers in Taipei” was used as the instrument. The number of effective subjects of this census was 643. Statistic Description, one-way ANOVA were computed for data analysis. And the results were: 1. Based on “risk management and safety”, “injury prevention and first aid” was the most requisite professional competency of all, and “PR and administrative ability” was the least. 2. “CPR” and “fitness trainer” were the most requisite certifications because of the consideration of “first aid/ safety”. And the application of “sports referee/ P.E. teacher” was the least. 3. “Gender”, “age”, “educational background” and “job category” were the main factors that caused the difference of the requirements of trainers’ professional abilities. 4. “Gender”, “age”, “educational background”, “membership period”, “major”, “job category” and “status/position” were the main factors that caused the difference of the requirements of trainers’ professional certifications.
