Situated learning encourages children to observe and gain information from their surroundings, thereby facilitating their scenario building skills. Based on this concept, it is believed that if scenario in children’s picture books were materialized in physical space, children’s situated learning experience would be substantially enriched. To understand how children interact with story scenarios, picture books were extensively explored while literature reviews were carefully done. Moreover, close attention was paid to the analysis of the perspectives used in stories as well as the collection of relevant cases. The main efforts are as follows. The first was to investigate how children’s imagination of scenario in picture books could be transformed into actual interior designs. Second, in order to facilitate more functional designs of children’s place space, examples of user experience were gathered to map out vocabulary of children’s visual imagery. Next, vocabulary was associated with the images in picture books. Through this step, it was understood that children in play space would have fertile imagination and various interactions with the space. Lastly, patterns of children’s imagination of scenarios were employed to create play space for them, hoping to help children re-experience the pleasure of reading picture books while they play in it. Drawing on four primary elements—images, vocabulary association, imagination, and forms, this study attempted to gain inspirations for the design of children’s play space. Through interviews conducted for this research, insights into the ways people tell picture book stories were obtained, in this sense, the combination of scenarios and the storyteller’s imagination. Based on these findings, three designs for the story Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland were developed for this study. Using images drawn from picture books, these intriguing and interactive play spaces not only showcase the designer’s personal style, but these spaces can also be incorporated into the interior design of bookstore chains, independent bookstores, story corners at home, children-friendly theme restaurants, and the public area of apartment buildings. In the future, these designs can be further transformed into art pieces of different forms or cultural products.
