Being located at the subtropical area and surrounded by sea, the lightning stroke events happen frequently during the summer season in Taiwan. Lightning strokes usually cause the short circuit fault which results in the outage or voltage sag in the power system. Because the power transmission lines which serve Tainan Science-Based Park pass through the area of serious lightning strokes, the power quality and reliability will be affected by the lightning strokes. In this thesis, the phenomenon and characteristics of lightning surges are introduced first. Then the probability of lightning of nearby transmission lines is analyzed statistically from the historical recorded data. Based on the statistical results obtained, the ‘Matlab-Simulink’ software package was adopted to simulate the reliability of power system. The backup transmission line was also taken into consideration in the simulations.
