Business model innovation: cash flow and information flow in blockchain application

This case study analyzes the application of blockchain to business model innovation. Using disruptive innovation and interdisciplinary research as the theoretical framework, this study collected the first-hand data of four Taiwan blockchain startups through interviews, Following the Gioia’s analyzing method, this research made a cross-case comparison of the relationships between the background of founding teams, business model innovation, the breakthrough innovation in cash flow and information flow. The results show that under the new blockchain technology, most startup teams develop their business model in a more efficient manner through adopting existing business model, which is related to the background of founders and the early stage of industry development. However, founding teams with more operational experiences in the market tends to create more innovation in their business models such that they are more likely to include the complementary and lock in factors in their business model innovation. In addition, most of founding teams change cash flow and information flow in blockchain application through network model and market offer model adjustment to create or reshape a new financial approach under the new technology.
