The Image-based Social Networking Platform Design Research in Travel Scenarios

While Web 2.0 dominates our online world, with the popularity of mobile devices and wireless networks, the travel habits of modern people have changed. Various sources of travel information can be easily accessed from diverse online services. Besides the quick acquisition of traveling advice, since social networking services became part of our daily life, travelers can share their travel experiences whenever and wherever they want. In other words, users of social networking services become important providers of travel information. The design research brings out a social networking service for travelers to explore points of interest around them and to create route plans instantly. Based on the travelers’ experience, traveling habits, and their social interactions and preferences on the social networking services, the design attempts to provide trustworthy, personalized information efficiently. In addition, it helps the users to create flexibility of itineraries, which increases novel traveling experiences for them. The work is developed through three stages. In the first stage, the researcher applied the focus group and the in-depth interviews with travelers of various interests. Through the analysis of affinity diagrams, we successfully depict a flow model and design guidelines of the image-based social networking service for travelers. In the second stage, five concepts were developed based on the model and the guidelines drawn from the user research. Meanwhile, we introduced the concepts to the potential users and collected feedbacks, and completed the prototype through the convergence. In the final stage, the prototype was modified as the result of the user testing process to meet the users’ needs. The design research utilizes travelers’ online social interactions and photo-sharing behaviors, to establish the information cycle in travel scenario. Through the testing and verification of the prototype, the study aims at improving travel experiences in the digital age.
