Behavior Analysis on Perfectionism of Casual Game Players

The purpose of this research is to find out how perfectionism influences the performances in the face of imperfect situation by analyzing the players’ behavior which is set in the situation of playing computer games. The researcher hopes to further verify the game as a measurement of perfectionism. In the experiment, the Chinese Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale and the first chapter in the casual game ‘Cut the rope’ were used and the results of them were compared statistically. The task for the participants was to finish the scale and then pass all 25 levels in the first chapter of the game. When the players were playing, their performances were observed and recorded, which included the number of times played, the time spent and the final score. The Chinese Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale contains five dimensions: Concern over mistakes(CM), Personal standards(PS), Parental expectation(PE), Doubts about actions(DA) and Organization(O). Each dimension should be summed up independently and the total score of the negative perfectionism is the sum of the scores of ‘CM’, ‘PS’, ‘PE’ and ‘DA’. Only O is the positive perfectionism dimension. The results reveal the following findings: 1. The player's perfectionism is significantly related to whether the player has ever replayed after passing the game level. 2. Both score of CM-dimension and negative perfectionism have obviously positive correlation with total replay-times after games. 3. Perfectionism scores do not correlate with the total score and replay-times in games. 4. Scores of CM-dimension and negative perfectionism are significantly correlated with play times and time consuming in 6 game levels with the minimum scores for players. Score of PS-dimension has obviously positive correlation with time consuming of game.
