Family has always been the basic unit of society. In different family life cycles, family members play different roles and carry different expectations. This article attempts to use the family theme as the central and starting point to explore the family in Huang Chunming’s novels and the complex emotional bonds as well as interactions between family members; so as to see what kind of human ethics they reflect. The article is divided into five chapters. The first one deals with problematic, a review of the research done by precious scholars; it aims to establish a proper scope of the present study and proposes the current article’s research methods as well as possible contribution. The second chapter talks about the image and role of parents and grandparents as represented in Huang’s writings involving the family theme. The resilience of maternity, as tough as the determination of paternal figures; the two together construct a specific Chinese familial culture that lasts for thousands of years. The caring and kindness shown by grandparents towards the grandchildren, as wide and limitless as the land and sea that never run out. The third chapter analyses the relation between parents and children, how children eventually learn of their parents’ efforts in raising children when they too become parents, and the generation gap in terms of value reflected through different stages of life and the different responses it evokes. In light of which, not every family is happy and satisfied, and the success or doom of a home relies not only on the blood but also on the mutual efforts of family members, on their positive attitude towards a common home. The fourth chapter discusses the matrimonial relation depicted in Huang’s novels. Marriage being the beginning of family, through which, husband and wife establish a socially recognized matrimonial relationship. In Huang’s writing, there are no passionate vows or oaths involved in the plot nor tragic love stories that drive tears to the eyes, but rather plain and simple, down-to-earth love that moves the reader slowly but deeply. The fifth chapter being the conclusion, where I conclude the findings of the study of family theme in Huang’s novels as a whole. Huang cares much about people from the lower class, and pays special attention to the issue of family. He reflects deeply and criticizes profoundly the concept of “filial piety,” which can only lead us to reflect on contemporary social phenomena and observe the various faces of the people that make up the Taiwanese society as we know.
