Over the past few decades, picture book reading has been recognized as one of the most effective methods for second language learning for young learners. A number of studies have investigated the use of picture book reading, but its relation to vocabulary acquisition is still poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of picture books on the vocabulary acquisition and learning attitude of Taiwanese elementary EFL learners in Nantou County, Taiwan. Six EFL primary students (2 boys and 4 girls) from a rural area participated in this program and received forty minutes of picture book reading instructions interwoven with vocabulary learning strategies per week for four months. Five picture books were employed as reading materials and diverse vocabulary learning strategies were integrated into the picture book reading sessions, including “Representing Sounds in Memory”, “Repeating”, “Grouping”, “Association”, “Total Physical Response”, “Using New Words in the Context”, and “Keyword Method”. The researcher distributed pre- and post-test, questionnaires, observed students' participation, took field notes and interviewed the participants after the ten week intervention. The results revealed that English storytelling interventions had a positive effect on students’ reading attitude, and had a significant influence on their vocabulary acquisition. The findings of this study are as follows: 1. Picture book reading intervention integrated with vocabulary learning strategies can positively affect students’ learning performance, especially in vocabulary acquisition. 2. Students are aware of the importance of vocabulary learning strategies and advanced learners can interweave different strategies when acquiring vocabulary. 3. Using picture books as the medium of English learning can trigger students’ interest in learning the target language. Learners have boosted confidence and are Based on the results and findings, suggestions for future studies are discussed. This study may provide English teachers with a better understanding of how picture books can affect English as foreign language learners’ vocabulary acquisition.
