Robots have been used not only as a toy but also as a social mediator that interacted with autistic children since 1998. Our goal is to build an advanced interaction scenario between the robot and an autistic child. In this way, we try to improve his/her social skills. The training is done by a humanoid robot named DARwIn-OP. Eventually, we want to design the behaviors of the robot that can make it not only as a toy but also as a playmate, and the robot is able to take initiative interacting with autistic children. Practically the educator is going to trigger one of several different interaction games, within one game the robot acts autonomously or semi-autonomously. From the point of research, we also plan to quantify in several ways how much attention of the child can be attracted by the robot. We also use music as a mediator between robot and autistic children. Our hope is that the interaction can improve their social skills and evaluate these measures for the practical applicability.
